New film highlights urgent need for foster carers in Swindon

A powerful new short film, The Run, has been launched by Swindon Borough Council today (09 Oct) to support efforts to recruit more foster carers.

Currently, 310 children are in care across Swindon, with 42 per cent placed outside the Borough away from loved ones and friends due to a shortage of local foster families.

The new film, produced by the award-winning production company ReelTwentyFive, carries the message that fostering can provide a safe and nurturing home for children and teenagers placed in care.

Created in collaboration with 90 councils nationwide, the film premiered at the Everyman Cinema in Birmingham and will be used as a central part of the local fostering campaign to raise awareness and inspire more people to consider fostering.

The Run tells the story of Tom, an 11-year-old boy who runs, not just for sport but to escape a chaotic home life and to get to school in time for breakfast. Despite facing adversity, Tom’s talent is nurtured by his foster family and culminates in a triumphant moment at an athletics tournament.

“The message of this project is very simple, but so important.” said Councillor Paul Dixon, Cabinet Member for Children’s Social Care, marking the launch of the video. “We have children that need foster carers, and we need people to foster for the Council.

“Produced alongside other local authorities, this film is a powerful reminder of the difference a stable, loving home can make to a child’s life. I urge anyone who thinks they can provide a loving home to a local child, to reach out to our fostering team who can provide specialist advice and support.”

The full video is available on Swindon Borough Council’s YouTube channel.

Swindon’s fostering service offers extensive support, training, and financial allowances to foster carers. The Council is especially keen to hear from people who can provide homes for brothers and sisters, teenagers, and children with additional needs.
