SNAPPED: The Howitzer in Swindon

Today (24th October) The Howitzer (kindly loaned by the Great Dorset Steam Fair Ltd.), was be towed by a Burrell traction engine built in 1901, crewed by Colin & Ian Hatch, through Swindon. Check out our gallery below...

A second engine towed the support trailer with coal and water supplies sufficient for the day. This was a Clayton & Shuttleworth built 1914, crewed by Rob Johnson (owner) and Pete Tye. These engines are typical of the period where engines of this type were commandeered into War Department service at home and abroad. Travelling speed 5 mph.

The vehicle departed from Lotmead Farm at 8.30am, to the Magic Roundabout before a photographic stop in Penzance Drive near Outlet West car park at 10.30am.

There was then a public stop at the iconic Weighbridge Brewhouse Penzance Drive 11.00am. After departing, it travelled to St. Marks Church for brief photo stop 1.00pm

It then stopped at UTC to meet the students before the engine towing the Howitzer proceeded back on to the Great Western Way to STEAM museum, and the second engine with support trailer travelled to Lotmead.

The Howitzer & Burrell will remain at STEAM to be on show at the Swindon Beer Festival, 25th to 27th October. The replica Works Hooter mounted on the roof of STEAM will be powered by the boiler of the Burrell during these dates.
