STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway

STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway.

See famous locomotives, ‘drive’ the train simulator, travel through the history of Swindon's Great Western Railway and even work the signals in the interactive GWR signal box!

STEAM Museum are open Monday – Saturday from 10:00am – 5:00pm (last entry 4:00pm). Sunday 11:00 - 4:00 pm (last entry 3:00pm). View their full opening information here.

Housed in a beautifully restored Grade II railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works, STEAM tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway.

The pioneering vision and engineering genius of Isambard Kingdom Brunel led to the Great Western Railway network becoming regarded as the most advanced in the world.

Do I need to book?

You can book online in advance or on the day. 

What are the opening times?

Mon–Sat 10:00–17:00. Sun 11:00–16:00. Last entry one hour before closing. 

Where do I park?

Use the Swindon Designer Outlet North/West car parks. Do not use the adjacent bus lane. No free parking for events.

Is it accessible?

Lifts and ramps throughout. Free carer ticket. Wheelchair or scooter loan available with booking.

Is the STEAM Museum family-friendly?
