Holloway embarrassed by loss at Grimsby, as Town's play-off quest heads to final day
Boss Ian Holloway admitted his embarrassment as Swindon Town’s hopes of a League Two play-off place were left hanging in the balance heading into the final day of the season.
Holloway’s men were thumped 4-0 at Grimsby in their penultimate league fixture, with Jaze Kabia netting a hat-trick for the hosts to go with a goal from Maldini Kacurri.
Defeat meant Town sit seventh in the League Two table, having played a game more than Chesterfield, who host Crewe later today.
Town will play Chesterfield in the final game of their regular league campaign with their play-off hopes still in the balance.
But Holloway admitted it would be tough to pick up his players after what he described as an embarrassing display.
Reflecting on the loss at Blundell Park, Holloway told BBC Radio Wiltshire: “I’m bitterly disappointed. I’m embarrassed. That’s my team and I didn’t recognise any one of them to be honest.
“We got outplayed, outfought and I am totally bereft of what to say because it looked like they didn’t want to play. Looked like they couldn’t handle the situation. Looked like they got outmuscled and outrun.
“It’s probably the worst performance any of my teams have ever given me. It’s very difficult to protect myself or anybody else.
“Absolutely gutless, fightless and not one person picked up anybody else and drove them on to do anything.
“We’ve got a hell of a week in front of us because to get in the play-offs is the minimum goal. After today, how can you be optimistic, look at that and think ‘yeah we can turn that around in a week’.
“All I can do is apologise to the fans because I can’t tell you how disappointed I am. Let alone them for coming all this way in their numbers and having to face that embarrassment.”
