Holloway: We promised so much and delivered absolutely zero
Boss Ian Holloway admitted his Swindon Town side “delivered absolutely zero” as they saw their League Two promotion hopes dashed on the final day of the season.
Town needed to beat Chesterfield at the Nigel Eady County Ground to ensure a play-off place in the division.
But after suffering a 2-1 loss to the Spireites, they were left ninth in the division, three points outside the top seven, having looked as if automatic promotion was a possibility earlier in the season.
Reflecting on the end to the campaign, Holloway said: "I can only apologise to all of the Swindon fans. I was in with them and heard their cheering, but we promised so much and delivered nothing in the end.
"You can see that I am bitterly disappointed, but it has been coming.
"We have been gradually getting worse since the [January] window, with the injuries that we have had in the group, and we promised so much and delivered absolutely zero in the end. I am devastated.
"We haven't done well enough, we've lost too many games, we haven't won enough games, and we've ended up not good enough, which is hard to take right now, but that's a fact."
The result means Town will compete in league two for a sixth successive season in 2026/27.
