New Skatepark Planned for Royal Wootton Bassett After 20-Year Campaign

A long-awaited skatepark is finally on the horizon for Royal Wootton Bassett, marking a major milestone for the local community after more than two decades of campaigning.

Set to be built at Coronation Country Park, the new facility will provide a dedicated space for skateboarders, BMX riders and scooter users, and residents are now being invited to help shape its design.

Community-Led Design for a New Generation

The project is being driven by Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council alongside a dedicated Skatepark Working Group made up of councillors and local residents. After years of discussion and renewed momentum over the past two years, the plans are now firmly moving forward.

A key part of the process is community input. Local riders and supporters are encouraged to share ideas on what the skatepark should include; from essential features like rails and ramps to more advanced elements such as quarter pipes and bowls.

Engagement has already been strong, with hundreds of responses submitted to an online questionnaire, reflecting clear demand for a well-designed, inclusive space.

Designed by Industry Experts

The contract to deliver the project has been awarded to Maverick Skateparks, a leading UK specialist known for creating high-quality, community-focused skateparks across the country.

Their approach will combine professional design expertise with local insight, ensuring the finished space meets the needs of all abilities, from beginners to experienced riders.

In addition to the online survey, further consultation is planned through school visits and in-person sessions, giving young people in particular the opportunity to influence a facility designed for them.

From Controversy to Community Asset

The journey to this point has not been without challenges. Early proposals more than 20 years ago faced resistance, at a time when skateboarding was less widely recognised and often misunderstood.

Today, attitudes have shifted significantly. Skateboarding is now widely accepted as a mainstream sport - even featuring in the Olympics - and purpose-built facilities are increasingly seen as valuable community assets that promote physical activity, creativity and social connection.

Local events in recent years, including a pop-up half-pipe at the Bassett Youth Festival, have highlighted the growing appetite for a permanent skatepark in the town.

Have Your Say

With plans progressing, now is the time for residents to get involved and help shape a facility that reflects the needs and ambitions of the local community.

By contributing ideas and feedback, skaters, riders and supporters can play a direct role in creating a skatepark that will serve Royal Wootton Bassett for years to come.
