Bristol to Oxford Direct Train via Swindon Returns – GWR Service Restarts September 2025
Rail passengers can look forward to easier weekend journeys as a direct train service between Bristol and Oxford via Swindon returns this autumn.
Starting Saturday 20 September 2025, Great Western Railway (GWR) will run services connecting Bristol, Bath, Chippenham, Swindon and Oxford. The trains will operate twice on Saturdays in each direction and continue until May 2026.
The route was first trialled between September 2024 and May 2025 and proved popular with travellers. Following a short summer break, GWR has decided to bring the service back for a longer trial, with findings being shared with the Department for Transport. This feedback will help determine whether the connection could become a permanent addition to the timetable in the future.
For passengers, the benefits are clear. The new direct service removes the need to change at Didcot or Reading, saving around ten minutes per journey and reducing the risk of being affected by delays or missed connections. It’s expected to be particularly helpful for those travelling for leisure, events, or day trips across the region.
With quicker travel times and fewer changes, this new connection between Bristol, Oxford and Swindon is set to make weekend rail journeys more convenient and enjoyable.
