Visitors had a rare chance to ride the tracks and experience the charm of this unique vintage vehicle for themselves.
Built in 1958, Railbus W79978 was one of only four made for the Kemble to Tetbury and Kemble to Cirencester branch lines. It was a regular sight in Swindon until those lines closed in 1964.
After more than sixty years, the lightweight railbus returned to its original platform at Cirencester Town Station during the Cirencester History Festival earlier this year, then traveled back to Swindon on November 2.
The vehicle has been carefully restored at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway. The project was done in stages: restoring sections, running the vehicle for visitors, and continuing work to keep its historic design.
After its farewell rides in 2025, the railbus has gone back to the Engine Shed for more restoration before it returns next year.
The return of Railbus W79978 celebrates Swindon’s railway heritage and shows the dedication of volunteers who work to keep this history alive for future generations.
