Historic Swindon Pub Reopens as Community Hub After Major Restoration
A much-loved historic building in Swindon has been given a new lease of life, as The Cricketers reopens following a significant £250,000 refurbishment, transforming the former pub into a vibrant community hub in the heart of the town’s Railway Village.
Located on Emlyn Square, the Grade II-listed building has long been a familiar landmark in one of Swindon’s most historic neighbourhoods. Now, thanks to an ambitious restoration project led by Swindon Heritage Preservation, it is once again open to the public, this time with a renewed purpose focused on education, community use, and local engagement.
Breathing New Life into a Historic Landmark
Dating back to the mid-1840s, The Cricketers has played many roles over the decades, including serving as a public house from 1859. Its latest transformation marks a new chapter, carefully preserving its heritage while adapting the space for modern community needs.
The refurbishment has been made possible through a combination of funding, including support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, alongside contributions from Historic England and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. This investment has ensured the building’s historic character is retained while making it accessible and functional for future generations.
A Space for Community, Learning and Events
Now reopened, The Cricketers has been reimagined as a flexible community venue. The space will host educational activities, local initiatives, and a wide range of events, while also being available for private bookings by businesses, clubs, and community groups.
The lounge area is already open for hire, with plans for the venue to become a hub for everything from celebrations and meetings to projects that support the wider Swindon community.
Upstairs, further development is underway, with proposals including residential accommodation and enhanced facilities, ensuring the building continues to play an active role in the neighbourhood.
Celebrating Swindon’s Heritage and Future
The reopening has been widely welcomed as a proud moment for Swindon, reflecting both the town’s rich history and its commitment to preserving it.
The project highlights the importance of heritage-led regeneration, bringing together local supporters, volunteers, and organisations to safeguard a piece of Swindon’s past while creating new opportunities for the future.
Situated within the historic Railway Village - an area closely tied to Swindon’s industrial roots - the building now stands as a symbol of how heritage can be adapted to serve modern communities without losing its identity.
A New Chapter for The Cricketers
With its doors open once again, The Cricketers is set to become a focal point for community life in Swindon. As plans continue to evolve, The Cricketers represents more than just a restored building; it’s a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together to protect and reimagine its shared history.
