We dined as a family, and it was perfectly suited to that, but what really stood out was how easily the space works for everyone. It’s just as ideal for couples looking for a relaxed Sunday treat as it is for families getting together.
You can choose to dine in the main restaurant or opt for the bar area, which has the same inviting atmosphere and is also dog-friendly, a thoughtful touch that adds to the easy, inclusive feel of the place.
The Sunday roast menu here is, quite simply, outstanding. In a region known for good food, this is a roast that really stands out, not just for quality, but for value too. With prices ranging from £19.95 to £27.95, there’s genuinely something for everyone, and the generosity of the plates makes it feel like exceptional value for money.
Every roast is served with beautifully cooked roast potatoes, maple-glazed root vegetables, cabbage, leeks and peas, all done properly, with care and attention. The meats themselves are excellent across the board. The native-bred roast beef is full of flavour and cooked just right, the rump of lamb is tender and rich, and the roast chicken supreme is juicy with crisp, golden skin. The pork loin is equally satisfying, moist and well seasoned.
If you’re torn between choices, the Trio Roast is an easy decision. It’s a wonderfully indulgent combination of dry-aged native roast beef, roast chicken, sage and shallot stuffing and pork loin, served with Yorkshire puddings and proper traditional gravy. It’s comforting, generous and exactly what a Sunday roast should be.
The sides are also well worth exploring. From tenderstem chilli broccoli and maple-and-mustard glazed carrots to creamed spinach, sautéed greens with pancetta, creamy cauliflower cheese, and, of course, pigs in blankets, everything is designed to complement the main event without overwhelming it.
While the roasts are clearly the stars, the wider menu is impressive too. One of our party chose the chicken Caesar salad, which was beautifully balanced and thoughtfully prepared, a great option if you’re after something a little lighter without feeling like you’re missing out.
The wine list is another highlight, with a really strong range that caters for different tastes and budgets, and pairs perfectly with the richness of a Sunday roast.
What really brings it all together, though, is the atmosphere. The Kings Head Hotel feels friendly, comfortable and unpretentious, while still being polished and well put together. The service is warm and attentive without ever being intrusive, and there’s no sense of being rushed, exactly how a Sunday lunch should feel.
All in all, this is a Sunday roast done exceptionally well. Great food, excellent value and an atmosphere that makes you want to come back. If you’re looking for what may well be the best Sunday roast in the Cotswolds, The Kings Head Cirencester is a table well worth booking.
