Drinan does the trick and would like Liverpool away in FA Cup third round

Aaron Drinan insisted he would love for Swindon Town to land a Premier League club in the FA Cup third round, after firing his side into a potentially big tie.

Drinan netted a hat-trick as Town booked their place in the third round, with a 4-0 home victory over Bolton Wanderers.

Joe Snowdon was also on target as Ian Holloway’s side put their names in the hat for Monday night’s draw, where both Premier league and Championship teams enter the competition.

Asked whether he had any preferences on who he would like to face, the Irishman said: “I will just wait for the text I think! I wouldn’t mind Liverpool away being a Liverpool fan. Everyone looks at the Premier League teams don’t they? I guess you’d take any.”

Victory over Wanderers was the second success against higher-level opposition in a week for Swindon Town, having also overcome Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday.

Beating Bolton also ensured they scooped a significant £79,500 in prize money.

Reflecting on the game as a whole, Drinan said: “We are really pleased. To be honest, I think it’s one of the best we have played and pressed all year. I thought we were superb.

“Everyone got after the ball and squeezed as a team and that’s probably where some of our goals came from.

“I think a lot of stuff comes off the back of pressing with intensity but, when we had the ball we did the right things and played when we needed to play, as well as turning them when we needed to turn them. The mix of that caused them a lot of problems.”

He added: “The confidence when you are scoring, you shoot a lot more, try to get into goalscoring positions a lot more and that’s obviously the way it’s been for me since the start of the season.

“It’s still early on but you’ve just got to try to remain consistent the whole year, and that’s the plan.”
