Swindon Wildcats Match Report 16/09/12
Sheffield Steeldogs 5 - 4 (AOT) Swindon Wildcats.
Last Sunday evening the Swindon Wildcats closed out their first weekend of the 2012/13 season, after earning another well deserved point.
Despite losing out to an eventual overtime goal at the hands of Sheffield Steeldogs, Swindon are already showing great signs of gelling as a side with just two games gone this season.
It was not long before Swindon were to show these signs on the road, as forward Aaron Nell opened the scoring from a pass in front of net off fellow linemate Jonas Hoog. Minutes later and the visiting side then striked once again and again with Nell replicating his previous effort to give Swindon a 2-0 lead. Ending the period, Finnish import Matius Perrkio would then make it 3-0 as his rapid shot would leave a helpless netminder with little to do as third was notched for 'Cats on the road.
The second period soon saw a reply from Sheffield and within minutes, forward Greg Wood would beat Wildcat netminder Skinns with a pinpoint shot. Assisting the initial goal, import Pavel Gomeniuk would then follow this up with a goal of his own, scoring on what was another wave of attack for the home side.
Despite seeing two goals scored against them, Swindon were far from beaten as a reply was soon to be found. Following several attempts in front of net, forward Jamie Hayes would eventually score for the 'Cats, tapping the puck past the Steeldog netminder and in for a 4-2 scoreline.
Keeping in style with such an end to end game, Sheffield then found a goal of their own as Edgar Bebris netted an attempt over the shoulder of Skinns. The momentum then lead to an equaliser for the Steeldogs who although being denied after several shots, would eventually find that fourth goal as Ben Morgan finished on a pressuring attack around the 'Cat goal.
The third period saw niether side back down from an attacking game and although both netminders were found working hard, neither would let up to gift the opposing team that defining goal.
With this in mind, the game soon led to overtime and for the second time in the Wildcats' weekend. It was not long before the score was broken however and to the delight of the home crowd, it was Sheffield who would claim that second point. A powerplay situation left the Steeldogs on the attack and with a 4 on 3 situation, previous scorer Greg Wood would find the net and close the night's game with a 5-4 scoreline.
Although eventually falling short of a win this night, it is clear the Wildcats are gelling quickly and still hold a record of being undeafeted in regulation this season. Swindon will now take this into this Friday's game where they will meet the Slough Jets in what is sure to be another exhilarating game.
