Weekend off will do Swindon Town good, according to Luke Williams

Swindon Town head coach Luke Williams dismissed the idea that a weekend without a match has came at a bad time.

The Robins have found it hard to build up momentum this season, and are currently in the middle of a ten-day break without a fixture following a 1-0 win over Bradford on Saturday soon after a 1-1 draw at Southend.

Williams insists though that Swindon can use this time as a learning period to get to grips with Director of Football Tim Sherwood's tactics, who since his appointment has taken over from playing style and team selection from Williams.

Swindon do not have a match this weekend due to the second round of the FA Cup, which the Wiltshire side are not in due to their first-round replay defeat to non-league Eastleigh, who beat Town 3-1 at the County Ground after a 1-1 draw in Eastleigh.

After the Bradford win, Williams told the local media:

"I think Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, win, you've got a break coming up, win, it's the only way to feel good.

"There have been times when I've been here and the performance was that good, even after a loss we were that good we knew we were okay because we were playing such incredible football but at the moment we're trying to find our feet again and we're trying to build ourselves up and performance is, for now, secondary to the result.

"We need the points and then, I think, the performances will pick up as well.

"I think they need both (a rest and more coaching to under Sherwood's ideas). I think they need to be worked extremely hard and intensely and given time to recover for information to sink in and to reflect on this period of change and I'm pretty sure that's what will happen.

"(It's) not at all (annoying). I think it's a great opportunity for us, it's not something to worry about it's something to be pleased with, something to look forward to - this period of learning more and focusing on the ideas and then to try to recover as soon as we possibly can."

Town are back in action next Tuesday (December 6) when they host Luton Town in the second round of the controversial EFL Trophy, which has now entered the knockout stages of the competition after a group stage format.
