The Lowdown: Luke Norris

Much to the delight of many a Swindon fan, the club announced the signing of a much-needed striker in Luke Norris last week to replace departed top goalscorer Nicky Ajose. Gillingham fan and writer Ryan White tells Town fans what they can expect from their new forward.

"Luke Norris is a determined character who strives for the best and has the ambition to one day play in the Premier League," White reveals.

"I honestly believe he will be a beneficial aquirement for the Robins, but Swindon supporters may have to wait a while before getting their hopes up on the youngster."

Norris joined Gillingham in the summer of 2014 on a free transfer after being released by Brentford and was thrust straight into the fold at Priestfield.

"In Norris' first year at the club he was almost a definite starter under (ex-England U21 manager) Peter Taylor, before he was sacked on Christmas eve.

"After Justin Edinburgh's appointment in February 2015, Norris remained a first-team forward alongside Cody McDonald and he ended the season with seven goals in 44 appearances for us.

"The 23-year-old had a lot more promise and determination during his second season for the Gills though, with a tally of eight goals in 35 games."

Given that Norris is yet to make 100 career league appearances, Ryan is of the opinion that the ex-Brentford man is still a work in progress.

"Norris is a 50/50 player, you never know what sort of performance you will get out of him. He is unplayable on his day, but those days are few and far between.

"When Norris plays to his potential he can hold the ball up well and link the midfield with the attack and is never afraid to hit a ball from the outside of the box, but unfortunately he has more bad games than good ones.

"He seems to put in a small amount of effort, and for the lack of goals he scores is evident that he is not prolific and he can be very frustrating at times and fails to put pressure onto the defenders."

Luke Williams recently told Total Sport that he thinks Norris could be a "dynamic" forward but there are worries he may not suit Swindon's style of possession football.

"Norris would not fit (a passing system) at all," according to White, "hoofing the ball up the field to him is his style of play."

Swindon's latest addition will have to prove his old fans wrong, and he may well get his first chance to do just that against QPR tonight.
