Swindon Town manager David Flitcroft pleased with his young wing-backs in Notts County win

Swindon manager David Flitcroft was especially pleased with the efforts of his young wing-backs in the 1-0 win over Notts County on Saturday.

Kyle Knoyle (21), made only his first league start for Swindon at the weekend as he came in for Ben Purkiss, while Ellis Iandolo (20) replaced Matt Taylor in the line-up.

The combined age of Swindon's wing-backs against Notts was just 41, a mere five years older than Taylor alone, and 28 years younger than the combined age of 36-year-old Taylor and Purkiss, who is 33, equalling 69.

Iandolo is traditionally a number 10, but has had a few outings at left-back as Flitcroft likes to use his left-back as his main creative outlet, with Chris Hussey and Matt Taylor being Swindon's two leading assisters via crosses and set pieces.

Young Iandolo was also put on set-piece duty instead of Taylor and one of Iandolo's free-kicks led to a Swindon goal that was flagged offside while another later on was well saved.

Swindon switched to a 3-4-1-2 system on Saturday, which also led to the inclusion of Chris Robertson as one of Town's three centre-backs.

"If you keep doing the same things, you get the same results," Flitcroft said post-match.

"I felt as though players coming in, certainly Kyle and Ellis, you've got that youthful energy that goes out there and doesn't think about the past.

"The lads need to take all the credit because that's a good Notts County team that's come here that we've completely shackled and took three points off.

"The system allowed Kyle and Ellis to lock onto [Jorge] Grant, I think he's on 12 or 13 goals, good player, didn't even affect the game, Kyle locked him down completely."

Knoyle in particular had a less than ideal start to his Swindon career as he suffured a serious knee injury before the season even began, after former loanee Harry Smith fell on him in training.

Flitcroft said the man who joined on a free from West Ham is still finding his rhythm at Swindon.

"He's just not got in that rhythm yet, he's just out of rhythm but he's someone that's been really consistent now in his training, he's done excellent today."
