The Aquatics 50p was issued by the UK’s Royal Mint in 2011. These coins were part of a collection released before the 2012 London Olympics with 29 designs representing different sports.
The design on this rare coin shows a goggle-wearing swimmer moving through the water. In the standard design, the swimmer’s face is fully visible however on a very small number of coins, the swimmer’s face is obscured by lines and the coins have become known as ‘Lines Over The Face’ Aquatic 50ps.
“Only a few hundred examples with this rare design variation are believed to have been released. We're delighted that this coin has raised such a sum, it's a fair price for such a rare coin and we believe it's value will only increase over time," said coin expert Kimberly Day.
The coin was authenticated by one of the world’s top coin grading and assessment services - The Numismatic Guarantee Company and can be found on their online register of authenticated coins.
