Let's Talk
What are the most common reasons for divorce?
Unfortunately, divorce rates increase year on year. We've been speaking to some of the experts to find out more...
According to a recent survey by the National Fatherhood Initiative the 8 most common reasons for a divorce are;
Lack of commitment: 73% of those surveyed said this was the main reason they decided to untie the knot. 62% said that they wished their ex partner had worked harder to stay married. 35% of men and 21% of women said they wished they had worked harder during their marriage so that it did not end in divorce.
Too much arguing: 56% of exes said too much arguing was the reason for the split. Partner and head of family law and mediation at Jordans Solicitors, Lynn Durham, says; “Constant arguing that does not result in a resolution means you are not understanding or appreciating your partner's perspective and this can seriously damage a relationship. Mediation should always be considered before a divorce.”
Marrying too young: 46% of the people surveyed said that age contributed to the end of their marriage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of teenage marriages fail within the first fifteen years. That number drops to 35% for couples who marry in their mid-twenties.
Unrealistic expectations: 45% of respondents said this lead up to their divorce. Lynn says; “Couples do not always appreciate the amount of conflict that can come with marriage. They must learn to appreciate their differences for the marriage to gain strength.”
Lack of equality: 44% of those surveyed said that their marriage was unequal. If one person feels they have more responsibility than the other the relationship could suffer.
Lack of preparation: 41% believed they were not emotionally prepared for what married life would be like.
Abuse: Unfortunately 29% of splits occurred due to domestic violence. Lynn says; “The important thing for a victim of domestic violence seeking a divorce is to make sure they are safe before they start legal proceedings. Make the people close to you in your life aware that there could be dangers as you announce your divorce intentions so that they can look after you, any children you may have, and themselves safely.”
