Closed since September 2022, Fleming Way has undergone a major £33 million transformation, and Swindon Borough Council has now confirmed the official reopening date: Sunday, 31 August. The new bus boulevard aims to revolutionise public transport in Swindon and boost footfall into the town centre.
But it’s not just about new bus shelters, there’s a host of new features designed to enhance accessibility and encourage more residents and visitors to travel via the improved network.
New Drop-Off Point to Make Travel Easier
A key addition to the development is the relocation of the pick-up and drop-off point to Milford Street, adjacent to the new interchange. Designed with convenience in mind, the updated facility will allow up to six vehicles to stop for 10 minutes, giving plenty of time for passengers to greet friends and family or unload luggage before catching their bus.
This follows local concerns raised by residents about the lack of clear drop-off provision in early plans. The council’s response demonstrates its commitment to making Swindon’s transport infrastructure work for all users.
What’s New on Fleming Way?
In addition to the improved access, the upgraded Fleming Way will introduce several modern features:
· Larger, accessible bus shelters with space for wheelchair users
· Wireless charging facilities for public transport
· Solar panels to support sustainable energy use
· Digital screens displaying real-time travel information
· A significant landscaping effort, including the planting of 181 trees and over 23,000 shrubs and bushes
This greening of the town centre aligns with wider efforts to make central Swindon a more welcoming and attractive place for visitors arriving by bus, train, bike, or on foot.
This significant investment is not only a win for Swindon but also for the wider Wiltshire region, enhancing local infrastructure and demonstrating the area’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
