Martial Arts-Based Workout to Help New Year Resolutions

A new workout will be available at the Link Centre to help people who want to start a new fitness regime in the New Year.

The Swindon Borough Council-owned leisure centre will be hosting classes in Les Mills Bodycombat from January 2013, for which the term ‘fighting fit’ will take on a whole new meaning!

Bodycombat combines powerful moves from a range of self-defence disciplines, including Karate, boxing, Taekwondo and Muay Thai, but is a non-contact workout.

The class provides all the benefits of intense physical exercise – working the heart and lungs, and improving co-ordination, strength and agility. The dynamic kicking and punching moves are also great for reducing stress and boosting participants’ sense of well-being.

Each Bodycombat class is led by a fully-trained instructor, who takes participants through a series of pre-choreographed moves set to inspiring chart-topping music.

Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Strategic Transport, said: “We run a range of Les Mills workout classes in our leisure centres which have proved to be very popular and I’m sure that Bodycombat will also go down well with our Link Centre customers.

“The introduction of the workout comes at a great time with people setting themselves goals in the New Year and this new session is a great way to kick-start any new resolutions.”

Bodycombat is already available at the Haydon Centre in Haydon Wick and is one of seven Les Mills programmes offered at Swindon Borough Council’s leisure centres.

Others include Bodyattack (high-energy cardio), Bodybalance (Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates), Bodyjam (dance cardio), Bodypump (weight training with barbells), Bodystep (step aerobics) and RPM (indoor cycling).

Developed in New Zealand, the Les Mills range of exercise-to-music programs is fast becoming one of the world’s most popular ways to keep fit. All the choreography is developed in conjunction with health experts to ensure the moves are safe, and classes are updated every three months so participants stay inspired.

All of the Les Mills classes can be enjoyed on a pay-as-you-play basis or with all inclusive access under Swindon Borough Council’s Leisure Passport scheme.
