New Date for the Unveiling of the Diana Dors Blue Plaque
Unveiling of the Diana Dors blue plaque in Swindon on Saturday 14th January at 12 noon.
The team behind the Swindon Heritage magazine are delighted to announce the details of the unveiling of the first blue plaque in the country to honour Our Diana. The plaque, which is cast in aluminium, painted blue and with white lettering will be unveiled in Swindon’s Old Town in Kent Road on Saturday 14th January at 12 noon.
The precise location, which until now has been a closely guarded secret, is the site of Diana Mary Fluck’s birth. Diana’s birth certificate give a tantalising clue revealing the location as the Haven Nursing Home on Kent Road in Old Town Swindon.
Just a year after her birth in 1931 the Haven Nursing Home reverted to being a family home and the location of Diana’s birth was lost in history. The adjoining property was the doctors surgery and the two buildings had internal interconnecting doors that allowed the doctor to assist the midwives when necessary. Coincidentally, a book written about Diana’s life is called Connecting Dors.
Today we can reveal that the Diana Dors' blue plaque will span both the old Haven Nursing home and Doctors Surgery. The address is 61 and 62 Kent Road in Old Town, Swindon.
The owners of the properties were first approached by the Swindon Heritage team at the end of summer 2016. Both families jumped at the idea and are delighted to be living in such an important Swindon location.
The short ceremony will start at approx 11:30am and a very ‘special’ guest will unveil the plaque at 12 noon.
Who is the special guest? All will be revealed five days before the event.
