WILTSHIRE IT FIRM SHARES ESSENTIAL TECH TIPS AHEAD OF MICROSOFT WINDOWS 10 SHUTDOWN

With just 3 months to go until Microsoft ends support for Windows 10, Wiltshire-based IT experts Black Nova Designs are urging businesses and individuals to take action now – before security risks and hardware limitations catch them off guard.

From October 2025, Microsoft will stop issuing updates and technical support for Windows 10, affecting millions of users across the UK. This could leave many businesses exposed to cyber threats, unless they plan ahead.

“Lots of people still don’t realise that Windows 10 is reaching its end-of-life,” says Kyle Holmes, Managing Director of Black Nova Designs. “After October, using it becomes a real risk. No patches, no fixes, and no security support from Microsoft. For many businesses, that’s like leaving the door wide open to cybercriminals.”

Kyle and wife Danielle Holmes, who co-founded Black Nova in 2015, have issued a checklist of six essential IT tips every business should follow to stay secure, compliant, and competitive.

1. Upgrade from Windows 10 before it's too late.

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 in October 2025, meaning no more updates or security patches. Machines older than 2018 might not support Windows 11, so now is the time to check your hardware or consider replacing it before demand spikes.

2. Protect your data: backups and antivirus are non-negotiable.

Make sure you have reliable backups for all business documents, emails and data – and use a business-grade antivirus, not a domestic version. “We offer monthly packages that cover all of this from as little as £60+Vat per month,” Kyle said. “It’s a small cost that offers huge protection.”

3. Secure your access: passwords matter more than you think.

Still using the same password for everything? Stop. Use a password manager like LastPass to safely store strong, unique logins across your systems. “Weak passwords are still a massive vulnerability,” added Danielle. “And they’re so easy to fix with the right tools.”

4. Use the right Microsoft license.

If you’re running a business, you need a business license. “Using home licenses for business can result in hefty fines - into six figures,” Danielle explained. “Many people don’t realise they’re not compliant until it’s too late. If in doubt, we’ll help you check.”

5. Know your domain.

Your domain name powers your website and email accounts, so it’s critical you know who owns it and how to access it. “We always register domains in the client's name,” said Kyle. “But not every agency does that. It's essential you have control.”

6. Get Cyber Essentials certified.

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed certification that proves your business follows key cybersecurity best practices. “It’s not just a formality. It can help win contracts, build trust and keep your business safe,” said Danielle.

“Good IT isn’t just about having the latest gadgets – it’s about protecting what matters,” Kyle added. “And that starts with being informed.”
